Revealing perturbation responses with limited observations of biological communities

چکیده

Restrictions in empirical research of biological communities have limited our understanding the combined influence environmental variability and system structure on community composition. Spatial patterns composition less accessible systems, such as marine benthos, can often not be explained by many factors beyond direct impact environment members. We present a method that combines commonly collected data with analyses qualitative mathematical models, to assess only impacts variability, but also propagation through complex interaction networks. Transformed spatial describe members’ observed similarity response an external input. The output models describes predicted input entering any its variables. A statistically significant agreement between similarities indicates respective variable likely gateway for into system. is applied benthic macroinvertebrate Rance estuary (Brittany, France). Organisms identified gateways traits agree their documented spatially temporally structured variability. suggest use this novel framework more comprehensive identification drivers change, including members cascades environmentally driven change structure.

Practical Order-Revealing Encryption with Limited Leakage

In an order-preserving encryption scheme, the encryption algorithm produces ciphertexts that preserve the order of their plaintexts. Order-preserving encryption schemes have been studied intensely in the last decade, and yet not much is known about the security of these schemes. Very recently, Boneh et al. (Eurocrypt 2015) introduced a generalization of order-preserving encryption, called order...

Substrate-Limited and -Unlimited Coastal Microbial Communities Show Different Metabolic Responses with Regard to Temperature

Bacteria are the principal consumers of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the ocean and predation of bacteria makes organic carbon available to higher trophic levels. The efficiency with which bacteria convert the consumed carbon (C) into biomass (i.e., carbon growth efficiency, Y) determines their ecological as well as biogeochemical role in marine ecosystems. Yet, it is still unclear how chan...

An Intrusion Detection Game with Limited Observations

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) monitor various events in a networked system and analyze them for signs of security problems [1]. By extending the information security paradigm beyond traditional protective (e.g. firewalls) and reactive measures (e.g. virus and malware detection), they increase the controlling ability of the system administrator, and help him or her manage system security [2...

Estimation from Misaligned Observations with Limited Feedback

In remote sensing applications with large numbers of sensors, the global correlation structure of the sensor observations may not be known locally at the sensors. However, some knowledge of this correlation structure can enable the sensors to communicate collaboratively to avoid interference and combat channel noise. A model is proposed for the uncertainty in correlation structure, called a fad...

Revealing the Determinants of Widespread Alternative Splicing Perturbation in Cancer.

It is increasingly appreciated that alternative splicing plays a key role in generating functional specificity and diversity in cancer. However, the mechanisms by which cancer mutations perturb splicing remain unknown. Here, we developed a network-based strategy, DrAS-Net, to investigate more than 2.5 million variants across cancer types and link somatic mutations with cancer-specific splicing ...
